Winter Highlights

Posted on 14 Feb 2008

After three weeks of spending Christmas and precious time with their families our dorm students returned to their life and studies at BFA.  Here are some pictures emphasizing the “life” of BFA students.  By providing fun activities we seek to communicate the love of Christ to these kids who find it hard at times to live and study so far from their parents and younger siblings.  At BFA we seek to provide much more than a good education.

Meet Sue’s small group!

Tuesday nights are small group Bible study groups for high school and middle school students.  Sue and another woman on staff (Carol) team up and lead a group of six high school girls.  Their names are Solveig, Helen, Deena, Naomi, Lindsey, and Joanna.  Here they are at our house having a Christmas party:

Evangelistic Outreach in our community!

Thursday nights in the local town of Kandern are special nights for celebrating the Christmas season.  Campfires are lit for roasting doe on sticks and for places to gather together for conversation.  Booths sell traditional German foods and drinks, and local musicians perform to usher in the Christmas spirit.  Black Forest Academy was privileged to take the opportunity to present the message of Christmas through song, mime, and a Gospel message.  Have a look:

Hausbad Riedlingen (HBR) Renovations

As the three year “Project Renewal” of the Janz Building on the main campus nears completion we are now turning our attention to some much needed improvements on our dormatory facilities.  Our eight dormatory buildings scattered about in the surrounding German communities house 180 students, the majority of which are MKs.  HBR is one of these dormitories where Bob and the maintenance crew have been doing some renovation work this fall.  This past week we had a work team from a supporting church of Joe and Susie Stebner.  Joe is the maintenance crew supervisor.  The work team has been a great help in moving this renovation project along.  Below are some pictures of the progress which has been made:

Featuring some news from some of BFA’s alumni
(Where some of them have ended up and what they’re doing):

Joelle Lewis – “I’m teaching at Bilgi University in Istanbul, learning Turkish, touring the city, adapting to the culture, and meeting many new people.”

Charles Dokmo – “I’m now living in Okinawa and keeping very busy with my job in the Air Force.  God has been faithful and I’m very thankful to His grace to continue to walk with Him.”

Scott Sutton - ”Since leaving BFA, I have graduated with highest honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and am working full-time doing communications for a nuclear power plant. My parents were missionaries in Africa.  My years at BFA changed my life and set me up for personal and other success.  I deeply appreciate the personal attention and encouragement I received and am convinced that BFA is the best high school around.  I was able to explore my passions (Chronicle, yearbook, student council) and received grounding in my faith that served me well once I joined a secular state school.  The love and care you showed built a strong sense of self-confidence and … I credit a lot in my life to my years at BFA.  Thanks!”

Featuring Liel Dorm

Posted on 01 Nov 2007

Here are some pictures of the Liel dorm.  Liel is a little village about 5 miles from BFA.  We go to this dorm once a month as a family to substitute for the dorm parents to give them some time off.  The parents of these BFA students work in countries once evangelized by the Apostle Paul.  They are also serving in countries which were closed to missionaries just 20 years ago.

Featuring our Korean students!

From the Gospel of Mark 10:28-30

“Peter said to him, “We have left everything to follow you!”  ”I tell you the truth,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields–and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life.”

We have over 50 Korean students here at BFA.  Their parents have left everything as disciples of Jesus Christ and are serving Him in difficult parts of the world, and it is exciting to see the Lord fulfilling His promise to them by bringing their kids together at our school.  They enrich the student body with their friendliness and their pursuit of excellence in everything they do.  Samuel and Jaesook Won are ministers of korean care at BFA.  They organize special activities for fellowship, worship, and seek to get to know each of these students and their needs.  Here below are a couple of pictures from a recent fellowship dinner they shared together:

Missionary Kids, “God’s Handywork”!

Featuring Alison at Taylor University!

pics-for-web-004.jpg

“Having grown up in Italy as a child of missionaries, I would say my experiences in school, church, community, and culture are quite different -compared to the average mono-cultural student living in the United States. Moving and transitioning every three to four years as a child and into my teenage years, prohibited me from ever becoming fully rooted to any particular house, school or lifestyle. I was never able to experience staying in one place my whole life and getting involved in activities such as little league sports of the local YMCA club. Some people would think I was missing out on life because of being an MK (missionary kid), or that this kind of lifestyle would hinder me from ever becoming a fully “well-rounded” individual, because of being so deprived of stability and security. But I strongly believe that these factors have worked greatly in my favor, and have helped me, by the grace of God, to attain wider perspective on life.

Becoming fluent in Italian at the age of five immensely influenced my life, not only because of the lack of language barrier, but because I had a chance to reach the Italian culture for Christ, in my school and in the community. My lack of “roots” and stability have made it easier for me to transition from place to place, being able to slip in and out of cultures with a lot more ease than the average person. My lack of security and a stable home has made me realize the literal meaning of not storing up treasures on earth, but to look forward to my eternal home in heaven. Living in places for short periods of time has made me come to the understanding of the importance of seizing the moment, not only for myself, but also for God’s work. This realization has spurred me on to get involved in the various communities I have entered, no matter how long I was there for, and to live my time there to God’s fullest. In this way I have been able to get involved in my school, church, community and culture wherever I go. I always must remind myself, however, to put before me the goal of having Christ live in me and through me, because without Him, I am nothing. The factors that have contributed into making me the person that I am, all come from God, but I am far from being the “well-rounded” person who He wants me to become. I know however, that I am God’s vessel and He did not shape my character in the way that He did by accident; He had it planned from the beginning of time. It is my firm belief that God will use me and those in my generation to be leaders and to reach those who are blind to the faith, who desperately need to find the light of hope, which is in Christ alone.”

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God     prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10)

Think of the potential that each Missionary Kid (MK) at Black Forest Academy has to impact the world for Jesus Christ!

The Student Body of BFA:
As stated in its mission, Black Forest Academy is a school primarily for missionary children. This is represented by the fact that over 90% of students are children of missionaries with representation from over 40 different mission organizations. Black Forest Academy has a truly international student body with over 45 countries represented from around the world. Many of these students were born outside their parent’s passport countries and hold dual citizenship. Lastly, not all students live in the residences. Many live with their families in the Kandern area or commute across the border from Switzerland and France.
 This year’s Spiritual Theme:

ll Peter 1:3
“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”

September Update

Posted on 19 Sep 2007

Like us, I’m sure you are amazed that summer is over and the fall season is upon us.  Nine weeks of our summer were spent in the USA on Home Ministry Assignment.  One of our goals was to spend time with family, supporting churches, and friends in the Pennsylvania – New Jersey area.  We also met with our mission leaders at CrossWorld.  We also worked into our schedule some needed medical and dental attention.  Bob also completed a sound-proofing project on a couple of offices at the church. Other highlights of our summer were: a family vacation for a week “down the shore” in NJ, Sue’s nephew Garrett’s wedding in Indiana, and a few days in VA to be with Sue’s Dad and family. We ended our summer by taking our daughter Alison to Taylor University in Indiana to begin her first year of college.  We thank God for His traveling mercies, for the opportunity to spend time with many of our dear friends and family, and for the way that He provided for us in every way; a great car, and wonderful folks with comfortable guest rooms.  We would have liked to visit with more friends and family, some in the Midwest and Washington State but our short stay was a limiting factor.  We will try to visit with you whom we have missed the next time we are home for HMA.

We are back in Germany now almost three weeks.  It is good to be in our own apartment and into a scheduled routine of work and school activities at the Black Forest Academy.  We arrived the day before school started so it was hard getting back into the swing of things.  But despite the fatigue of travel and jet lag, it was exciting to begin meeting the many new staff and the ninety NEW students who joined our BFA family this year, giving us a total of 350 students from 49 different countries!  Preparations for these students were ongoing throughout the busy summer here with renovation work being done on dormitories, classrooms, and faculty rooms.  When we left for the summer there was a dire need for three English teachers and two music teachers.  The Lord provided indeed some very talented and gifted teachers and filled other positions needed within our staff as well.

350 students from 49 different countries!

Our Family?  Hannah has now started off her Jr year of High School being voted as captain of the JV Volleyball team.  Marshall  is now on the main campus as a Middle Schooler in the 6th grade.  He is happy to welcome new friends to his class and to be playing drums with the middle school chapel band. He continues with piano lessons and the local jr. accordian orchestra as well.  We’ve been talking (”skype”-ing) with Alison out at Taylor who is enjoying her classes and making new friends. Although still an undeclared major, she is pursuing studies in vocal music and Christian Education with the thought of going into ministry.

Sue and I are taking a German class after school and have also joined the junior class as ‘class sponsors’. This means helping with their fundraisers and traveling with them on class trips. It also means getting to work with and know the students in this class much more closely. I am still working full-time on the finishing touches of the major renovation to the school building. Sue is tutoring  everyday, still leading her girls’ discipleship group, helping out with the school play,  and we are back into the routine of substituting for dorm parents on their days off in a high school girl’s dorm on Mondays and for a co-ed middle school dorm one weekend a month.Prayer Requests:

Pray for us:

  • This week is “SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEK”.  There will be chapel every day with a special guest speaker and music.  The goal is to minister to the spiritual needs of our students early in the school year.  Pray for those leading these chapels, the individual students, and the effect this week could have on the student body as a whole for Christ.

                                     44-1.JPG

  • Pray for safe travel for the volleyball and tennis teams as they travel to play other teams on USA military bases and other international schools.  Pray for their witness for Christ as they play and interact with opposing team members and coaches.
  • Pray for a year of interpersonal and spiritual unity amongst our staff.
  • Please pray that Alison will be able to make it home for Christmas. We thought we had enough frequent flyer points to get her here but we don’t.
  • Pray for the teens, particuliarly the new students, who may struggle with home-sickness this month. Pray for their parents as they minister in hard places where their kids can’t be with them.

“We love you; study hard; we’ll be in touch; see you for Christmas!”
